Big Delta – the world’s largest 3D printer from Italy, capable of building houses

The Italian company WASP has created the world’s largest building 3D printer. It is called Big Delta. The device measures 12 meters in height and 6 meters in diameter. The system was created for the construction of residential buildings. According to the developers, the system consumes a minimum amount of energy, and at the same time is able to print not only the concrete, but also other materials, including clay.

Now the main task of the system is fast construction of inexpensive houses. This can come in handy, for example, in places where there has been a natural disaster and many people have lost their homes. In addition, such a printer is also suitable for developing countries, where large amounts of housing is needed. According to the developers, modifications of Big Delta will be able to work on other planets, creating homes for colonists, scientific bases and other buildings.

Last year, a 4.5-meter-high Big Delta prototype was shown at a construction show. Now a full-fledged system capable of mixing concrete or other materials by itself, using the original soil, cement, fibers and chemical components, has been put into operation. A small generator is enough to operate this system, since very little energy is consumed (in fact, we are talking about 100 Wt*h).

The UN estimates that in the next 15 years about 100,000 homes will need to be built worldwide as the world’s population continues to increase. WASP estimates that about 4 billion people will need additional housing by 2030, with an income of no more than $3,000 a year for those people. Using Big Delta, you can build enough quality housing very quickly, and it can solve many problems.

Now the company is already receiving requests for the possibility of using the system for the construction of various facilities in Europe and around the world. For example, an application to work with Big Delta was filed by the municipality of Iglesias on the southern coast of Sardinia. The developers are now selecting locations where it will be possible to test the construction system in operation.

By the way, the Chinese have already learned how to create housing in the same way. And the cost of a residential home for one family in this case is about 4,800 dollars. However, so far this technology can not be made widespread, due to a number of regulatory difficulties (in China). All logical – because we need the permission of various commissions and services, which need to make sure that the house will not collapse in the first month after occupancy.
