CADFEM CIS Expert Explained DED Modeling of Additive Manufacturing

The international conference “Additive Manufacturing: Present and Future” took place on October 7-8, 2021. At the event, representatives of companies and scientific organizations discussed a wide range of issues related to additive manufacturing, from research in the field of materials science and development of additive processes to computer modeling of additive processes. CADFEM CIS expert made a presentation devoted to DED modeling in 3D printing.

The additive technologies of today allow for the production of any object on the basis of a computer 3D model, both made from the ground up and on the basis of a reference scan (learn more here). While the first additive manufacturing systems mainly used polymer materials, modern 3D printers are able to work with different types of metals.

The latest version of Ansys 2021 R2 software includes the ability to simulate DED 3D printing. DED (Directed Energy Deposition, direct energy, and material input) uses energy from an external source to join materials by fusing them together during the application process, making this additive manufacturing method significantly cheaper than other 3D printing methods. Today, this method is widely used to repair or add material to existing parts.

Denis Kondratyev, head of the “Additive Manufacturing” department of CADFEM CIS, covered the peculiarities of modeling DED 3D printing in his speech. The expert reviews the main steps of this process in Ansys, using all the innovative methods of DED 3D printing and demonstrating current examples and possibilities of this method.

The presentation took place on October 7th at 17:45 in the section “Non-Destructive Testing Technologies, Software, and Equipment for Additive Manufacturing”.
