The 3D printing of the Israeli Modix

A provider of additive manufacturing and 3D printing solutions, Modix has built its reputation on large, scalable, kit-based machines at affordable prices.

Large format machines at attractive prices

Based in Tel Aviv, Israel, Modix is a supplier of large format 3D printers. After selling small desktop machines, it launched its flagship model, the Modix Big-60 printer. This machine has a print size of 610 x 610 x 610 mm and an affordable selling price that starts at $3,500. Recently, the company released another high-quality kit 3D printer, the Extra Large X120. Exhibited at TCT 2018 in the UK, this machine has a print size of 1,200 × 60 × 60 mm. It is available for pre-order at a price of $6,000. Both printers, using the FFF (fused filament fabrication) process, are among the least expensive on the market in terms of their size and scalability. These Modix machines support almost all polymer filaments: PLA, ABS, PLA composites (carbon fiber, wood, copper, brass), PHA, PVA, nylon, TPE & TPU (FleX) Co-Polyester, PETG… They are also equipped with false filament detection sensors.

A new aFFF technology

The Modix Big-60 2 machine can be equipped with one or two print heads… like many other printers. However, the company is working on a new process that it has named “aFFF” for Asynchronous Fused Filament Fabrication. This technology touts greater printing freedom and productivity with two print heads that share the same space, but are able to move independently on the X and Y axes. This innovation is in both software and hardware. Modix will tell us more in a little while… we have no doubt.

The Israeli market imposes the export

Shachar Gafni, CEO of Modix, explained in an interview with 3DPrintingIndustry that the majority of Modix’s business is in North America and Europe, as the Israeli market is too small and not suitable for kit solutions. Competition in Israel is also extremely strong. “In a population of seven million, there are many 3D printing companies – XJet, Nano Dimension and of course, Stratasys, to name a few.”

The case of Metralabs

On its website, Modix highlights case studies of its customers. Here’s one from German company Metralabs, which is using the Modix Big-60 3D printer to design the structure of its mobile robot. “The print quality gets better every time. We just finished a robot for a new project. All parts of the housing were printed with the Modix machine. The parts were ground, filled and then painted. For our prototypes and small productions, we normally use 1mm nozzles and 0.6mm layers. We usually use a white PLA filament. It takes about 20 hours to print each piece of the case. The machine is popular because the company director is thinking of buying a second one,” says Alexander Kloska, a mechanical engineer at Metralabs.
