Calibry Mini 3D scanner review

In today’s issue we introduce you to the novelty of the domestic manufacturer Thor3D – the Calibry Mini 3D-scanner. The model replaces the Thor3D Calibry and is designed for digitizing small objects with high accuracy.

In this article we detail the changes, new features and technical characteristics of the device.

About the manufacturer

Thor3D is a Russian company, has been creating 3D scanners since 2015 and is based in Moscow. Over five years, the company has released four devices, among which is Drake (you can read more about this model in the review) – the first professional wireless 3D-scanner.

The company’s core business is designing and producing handheld scanners with a well-designed feature set.

In Fall 2020, the company is offering handheld 3D scanners with a color touchscreen: the Calibry and Calibry Mini (https://top3dshop.com/product/thor3d-calibry-mini-3d-scanner). We’re talking about the new Calibry Mini below.

Features of the Calibry Mini

The Calibry Mini is externally similar to the previous Thor3D Calibry model. The scanner is designed for one-handed use, but some users may be more comfortable using their second hand for support. The word “Mini” in the name is not related to the size of the device, but to the range of tasks to be performed. The scanner is designed to work with objects in the size range of 20-300 mm.

An important advantage of the Calibry Mini is the 4-inch touch screen on the back of the device, which allows the operator to move freely in space without being tied to a computer monitor to control the quality of the scan.

The device works at a distance of 18-30 cm. The resolution is 150 microns and the processing accuracy is 70 microns per meter. Working space is 14.4 x 19.2 cm. Calibry Mini processes up to a million points in 1 second, capturing 25 to 30 frames in the same time interval. According to the manufacturer, the device is designed to work with dark and light-reflective surfaces as well.

The Calibry Mini accurately captures the textures and colors of surfaces. As such, it is recommended for use in the following applications:

  • Medicine. For example, orthopedics, otolaryngology. The 3D-scanner perfectly copes with digitization of feet and auricles. On the basis of received 3D-models specialists can create devices for hearing correction, implants, orthopedic insoles.
  • Archaeology and museums. High speed of information processing and color scanning makes the device perfect for expeditions and museums for digitization of small objects of cultural heritage.
  • Education. Its portable size and intuitive interface makes it a perfect basis for teaching digital technology to schoolchildren and students. The software gives you the ability to connect your device to an unlimited number of computers in the classroom.

Accessories

Included with the 3D-scanner: cables for connection, connection and power supply; power injector, instruction manual.

Getting ready to work

The principle of Calibry Mini is “plug and play”. Before you start scanning you must connect the power and USB cables to the power injector, which you then connect to the scanner. Your scanner is now ready for use.

Software

The free Calibry Nest software consists of two parts. The first one is installed directly on the device, the second one is installed on the job computer. The software is designed for simple image processing and file transfer to the necessary application.

Overview of 3D-scanner Calibry Mini

At the time of writing this article, handheld Calibry Mini was not yet on sale, so we do not have examples of using it for real user tasks. We suggest looking at examples of scans from the manufacturer.

Vase

Example: museum use for cataloging and creating an online exhibit.

Fork

Example: use in reverse engineering or creating 3D models for computer games.

Ear

Example: use in the design of hearing aids and headphones.

Similarities and differences between Calibry and Calibry Mini

The “Mini” prefix in the model name makes for some confusion in the usual positioning of the models of equipment. Usually this term means a less expensive device in the lineup. However, the price of Calibry Mini at the time of presentation exceeds the price of the base model Calibry for 70 thousand rubles.

In fact, Calibry and Calibry Mini – two devices with different functionality, although similar in appearance. Calibry works with large objects, for example, it can scan a whole car or a full-length person. Calibry Mini is designed for high precision digitization of small objects or parts of large ones.

Results

The Calibry Mini handheld 3D scanner digitizes small objects and elements of large objects with high accuracy. The Calibry Mini and Calibry models can be used together for a number of applications. The first scanner will provide detail and accuracy in the right areas, the second will increase the scanning coverage.

The device will be in demand in areas requiring accuracy, such as orthopedics, otolaryngology, archeology and work on the study and preservation of cultural values in museums. If you need to process a lot of small items, the scanner can be optionally equipped with a turntable.

We are confident that the Calibry Mini will be in demand due to its excellent feature set and features such as color and texture capture, high resolution and accuracy.
